What is Powder Coating:


Powder coating, as it is applied today, has been around since the 1960’s. It was developed as a more environmentally safe, low VOC alternative to liquid paints.  The powders are composites of polymer resins combined with various pigments, leveling agents and other additives.  The powder is applied to a well-cleaned metal substrate using a spray gun which applies an electrostatic charge to the powder particles, which are then attracted to the grounded metal part and sticks to the metal like a magnet.  After the powder is applied, the part is cured in an approximately 400-degree Fahrenheit oven to achieve a baked on finish.


It’s used on all types of metal parts and components from industrial machinery, automotive and motorcycle parts like wheels and bumpers, patio furniture, fencing, and household appliances such as refrigerators and stoves. 


Powder Coating vs. Liquid Paint:

Powder coated products are more resistant to diminished coating quality as a result of an impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light and other extreme weather conditions.  In turn, this reduces the risk of scratches, chipping, abrasions, corrosions, fading, and other wear issues. The final product is a finish that is far more durable than liquid paint that will last for years to come.  


Another advantage of the powder coating process is that it is environmentally friendly and virtually pollution-free.  Unlike liquid paint, no solvents are used, so only negligible amounts of volatile organic compounds called VOCs are released into the air.  In addition, unused or over sprayed powder can be recovered, so any waste is minimal and can be disposed of easily and safely. Choose powder coating and do your part to preserve the environment.


If quality, durability and the environment are important to you, then powder coating is the best protection for anything metal.  The cost is much cheaper than liquid paint.



Important Information About Getting Your Work Powder Coated:


Please be aware that in order to guarantee quality adhesion of powder coating, all parts will go through abrasive blasting, sanding, masking, pretreatment and be heated to approximately 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 


Prior to arriving at our facilities, all parts should be disassembled and free from any plastic, rubber, bearings, excessive dirt, oil, and grease. 


We do not guarantee powder coating on any parts that are cast aluminum, cast magnesium,  poor welds,  chrome plated, have an excessive amount of rust, or that are made of extremely thin metal.  Cast metal parts and parts with poor welded areas may experience “outgassing” or bubbles. While it is possible to powder coat over chrome plating, it is not possible to guarantee adhesion or the final color.  Parts that have a lot of rust or severe pitting may be further damaged by the media blasting used to prep the parts.  Extremely thin metals may warp due to the heat and/or may be damaged during the media blasting process.  We will take every precaution to minimize all of these issues, however, we cannot be held responsible if defects occur.


Color choice is the customer’s responsibility.  Mr. Speed Coatings will only suggest a color.  Powder is not liquid paint and may change slightly depending on the substrate, powder color choice and/or any top coats to be applied.  Mr. Speed Coatings will do their best to explain what to expect and to match your choices to the best of our abilities. Additional charges for removing the powder coating and re-coating will apply if there is a desire to change to a different color after an item has been coated.


Please be sure to pick up your parts/property upon being notified that it has been finished.  Property left longer than 30 days will be disposed of by Mr. Speed Coatings to make room for other customers incoming work.

Since paints and powders differ at the molecular level, matching powders to paint codes is not possible.  Not even companies like Sherwin-Williams and DuPont, which make both paints and powders can match their own products in both coating types.



Sandblasting/Media Blasting:


Mr. Speed does not do sandblasting/media blasting except for parts the size of a wheel.  We also only do media blasting for customers that are getting powder coating done with Mr. Speed.



Recommended Cleaning Method:


The recommended method for cleaning the powder coating surface is to use warm water and a mild soap.  We do not recommend using chemical cleaners such as brake cleaner, acetone, mineral spirits or lacquer thinners.  For difficult to clean areas, we recommend the use of a soft cloth, sponge or soft bristle brush.  Thoroughly rinse with water after cleaning the surface.


Any type of chemical that is harmful to the powder coated surface, such as acetone, mineral spirits, or lacquer thinners should be removed or cleaned immediately.




Production Runs Pricing:


For production runs, groups of the same items in coated with a single color ran on a regular basis, please call so we can discuss special pricing. 



Pricing Estimates:


  • All pricing is based on production colors of Satin Black, Semi-gloss Black, and Gloss Black.  This base price includes media blasting on raw parts.

  • On previously coated parts, there will be an additional charge for coating removal.  We cannot remove chrome and will only powder coat over new, quality chrome. We cannot, however, guarantee adhesion over chrome.  To guarantee adhesion, powder must be applied to an etched substrate.

  • For all colors, except production black powders, add $100 per order for Custom Color Charge.

  • For multi-coat colors add 50% per color in addition to first color charge.  For example, double coat would be one color with a top coat.  The cost would be base color price plus 50% for the top coat. Triple coat colors such as chrome base, transparent color with clear top coat add another 50% per item.

  • Wheels that are more than one piece will have a $25 charge per wheel to take them apart prior to coating.  There will also be an additional $25 charge per wheel to put them back together.

  • Parts to be powder coated, other than wheels, should be taken apart with all bearings, seals, etc… removed before dropping off parts to be coated. 

  • Absolutely no rush jobs.

  • Custom work such as two-tones, please come by the shop for pricing.  We need to see the parts to be coated and assist with color choices to ensure our customers get the best possible product.

Turn Around Estimates:


Pick-up and deliveries Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.


  • Production colors of Satin Black, Semi-Gloss Black, and Gloss Black expected to be done in 5 - 7 business days.

  • Custom single colors and double colors expected to be done within 10 business days.

  • Custom two-tone and other detailed custom work complete time varies depending on the amount of work to be done.
